Our Mental Health Day Self-Care Guide

Our Mental Health Day Self-Care Guide

On this World Mental Health Day, we want to remind you that mental health is just as important as your physical well-being.

Just as we actively do things to pamper and treat our bodies, we should also be making the same effort to relax, stretch, and soothe our minds.

Many of our customers have written to us over years, sharing their personal experience with mental health and the benefit our products have made in their life. This has inspired us to list our favourite ways to have a scentful self-care day.

1. Get a Good Night's Rest

Sleep is closely connected to our mental well-being. It’s our mind’s way of recharging after a busy day and preparing oneself for the day ahead. It’s no coincidence that 75% of those who are depressed are also experiencing signs of insomnia, according to the National Library of Medicine.

If you are having difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep we have a few tips to help send you to the land of nod.

  1. Avoid any screen time at least an hour before bedtime
  2. Skip the caffeine and alcohol
  3. Do something relaxing leading up to bedtime (read, meditate, take a bath, etc.)
  4. Spritz your pillow with 2-3 sprays of Dreamy Pillow Spray to promote a peaceful night.

2. Have a Good Meal

A well-balanced meal can do wonders for the mind and body. While we may think it’s only benefiting our bodies, a plate full of nutrients will improve your sense of wellbeing and overall mood. Try making a low-maintenance, healthy meal with family or a close friend. It will give you both the chance to reflect on the day in each other’s company as well as enjoy a healthy meal.

3. Fill your home with relaxing scents.

Scents have been used for centuries as holistic ways to meditate and promote healing. The soft glow of candles and wax melters can also take your peaceful place one step further with the additional mood booster.

Here is a list of scents that have been proven to benefit the mind.

4.  Have a Soak!

Allowing yourself to indulge in a long bath does much more than just feel amazing- it has many health benefits too!

Taking a luxurious bath will relax and calm oneself as well as alleviate heachaches and other pains. It's also a great way to unwind and disconnect ourselves from our screens and tasks beyond the bathroom walls.

To really reap in the benefits of a bath, treat yourself with your favourite bath time accessories, like soft music, lighting your favourite scented candle, and getting fizzy with a relaxing bath bomb.

No bath? No problem. Make your shower time just as peaceful by creating a sauna-like effect. Close your door and window to trap as much steam as desired. This is the time to dig out that extra fancy soap you've been saving, we suggest something soft and foamy like our Fluffy Whipped Soap.

6. Talk it Out
No matter what you're feeling, good or bad, putting your feelings into words and sharing them with a trusted friend is beneficial. This is a healthy way to take charge of your well-being and acknowledge what emotions you may be experiencing.

If talking face-to-face is too overwhelming, text messaging can be just as helpful. While saying "I'm feeling ___" to another person may be intimidating at first, it's a healthy exercise to practice and a great way to show support and trust with our friends.

Although it's important to treat ourselves kindly, true-self care is giving ourselves the gift of accepting help from others.
