How To Use Wax Melts

Wax melts are the latest trendy way to keep your home or office smelling fresh. They are rising stars in the fragrance scene. And if you haven't heard about them or don't know how to use them, don't worry. Keep reading to find out all the dos and don'ts of using wax melts.

What are wax melts?

Wax melts are made up of the same soy wax material as candles, but burned without a wick! They typically look like bars of chocolate, where you can break them up into squares for use. So how does a piece of wax without a wick even work?

These require the use of wax melters, which are super cute and decorative devices that heats up your wax melts. You can use either an electric burner or a tea light-powered burner to fill your room with a beautiful fragrance.

Wax Melts vs Candles, and Why Wax Melts May Become Your New Fav

When it comes to candles, we know how attached some people may be to them. They are the perfect addition to any room and leave any place smelling heavenly. But, there are 3 big reasons why you may want to make the switch to wax melts:

  1. Cost-Effectiveness
  2. Safety
  3. Convenience

The average small-sized candle, about 60oz, has a lifespan of about 42-54 hours according to an estimate of 7-9 hours for each ounce of wax. With wax melts, you don't burn the entire melt at once. You break it up into 1-2 pieces depending on how big your wax warmer is. If you use 2 squares, they should last for about 12-18 hours. Our wax melts break into 10 pieces, meaning you can get between 120-180 hours of aroma from one melt!

This makes wax melts a more cost-effective and smarter way to add some vibrant scents to your home.

As for the safety aspect, if you decide to use an electric warmer, it is flame-free! You do not have to sacrifice a fresh-smelling home because you are worried about the dangers of having lit candles. This type of warmer with some wax melt cubes is all you need to have a safe and scented room.

If you do opt for a tea-lit burner though, it is still generally more safe than lighting a candle. Tea lights typically burn themselves out.

Lastly, wax melts are a lot more convenient than candles. Generally, places like offices or student halls do not allow candles because of the open flame. By using a wax melt, you can still have your fragrances and get past the flame-free rule.

Are wax melts bad for you?

No, wax melts are not bad for you or your health. As mentioned earlier, they are usually safer than regular candles. Wax melts don't generate soot and if you opt for an electric burner, there is no flame either.

This makes wax melts the best alternative to traditional candles.

Find the Perfect Wax Warmer

Finding the perfect wax warmer depends on your personal style! Do you love the light aspect of candles? Or do you value convenience above all? Your answers determine what may be best for your home or office.

Electric Burner vs Tea Light Melter

The two wax warmers are either electric or powered by tea lights. If you answered yes to loving the light aspect of candles, a tea light warmer is your best match! If you love convenience, then an electric burner is the way to go.

Tea light candles are the heating source for your wax melts to diffuse the fragrance in your home. We recommend using a 4-hour unscented tea light. This is so there aren't competing scents and you can experience the full aroma of your wax melts.

Electric melters use a lightbulb or heating plate for your wax melts. All you have to do is turn on a button or plug your melter into an outlet to activate your warmer.

With either warmer, please remember to place it on a hot-safe surface and to turn it off/blow out the tea light once you are happy with the strength of the fragrance.

How to use a Wax Melter

Now that you have found the perfect melter, it's time to put it to use!

Choose a Wax Melt and Place it on the Burner

Find your favourite wax melt scents and choose which fragrance is best for the occasion. Then, depending on the size of your burner, place 1-2 cubes on your dish.

Turn on the Wax Warmer

If you have a tea light burner, light the wick of the candle to begin warming your melts. If you are using an electric one, please turn it on by pressing the button or plugging it in.

How long can you use wax melts?

With our wax melts, 2 cubes can provide 12-18 hours of use. However, we don't recommend burning them for that long in just one use.

Let's say you only burn the wax for 2 hours, you can allow the wax to harden and use the rest when you are ready.

Can you leave wax melts on overnight?

Please do not leave any wax warmers unattended or leave them on overnight. This is even more important if you have pets or children. Wax melts are generally safe, but it's best to be cautious.

Do wax melts lose their smell?

Yes, wax melts do lose their smell. This means that it is time for a new melt to be placed in the dish so you can enjoy the fragrances they have to offer.

Unlike candles, the wax does not evaporate. You will have to safely remove the wax once the scent is gone to start new.

How to remove wax melts

Once you've used your melts and are ready to try out a new scent, you have to remove the old hardened wax. The best way to do this is to melt the wax down into a liquid and dump it into the trash. Or you can use cotton balls to absorb the liquid. Then wipe down your dish to prepare for your next use!

Another way to remove them is by placing your warmer in the freezer. Your wax will become hardened and easy to grab off the dish in one piece.

What do you do with wax melts after use?

After you have used your wax melts, it's best to dispose of its leftover wax. Some people believe you can reuse the wax, but by the time it's ready to remove the scent is all gone. It's best to discard the leftovers and start over with a new wax melt!
